<br />
When I look back at this blog and see how long it has been since my last post, I can't believe that it has been two years since I have written a post. In the past two years my life has changed in a major way. I am no longer in the classroom and am now in administration. I am the Assistant Director of Special Education for my school district. Overall, I have to say, it's been a learning and growing process, but I do enjoy it. This year one of my projects is to write a monthly special education newsletter and it brought back all of the feelings of blogging. I enjoy celebrating others, sharing information related to special education, and helping others find ways to be efficient and serve the students we love. This, in turn, brought me right back to why I started a blog in the first place! <br />
<br />
Because I am no longer in the classroom, I have a different view of special education, but I am still in love with the students and teaching. My favorite part of my job is working with teachers and observing in the classrooms. My favorite day is when I am able to get into the schools and spend time with people I love and being around the students. <br />
<br />
My goal for now is to pick up blogging again and to share information both from the classroom and the admin side of special education. I plan to share information from the monthly newsletter as it will have a theme each month. September's theme is progress monitoring! Special educators always need help in that arena!<br />
<br />
Stay tuned!!<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
I love the beginning of a new school year! It brings hope, opportunity, and excitement. It is a time to make new plans from the reflections you made about your teaching and profession in the spring. It's time to take what you know about best practices and summer professional development and put those plans into action. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My new {school} year is really brand new and the first two days of school have already shown me that this is where I am supposed to be right now. Over the first two days of school I was able to tour several of the schools in our district. I met so many new people. Everyone I talked to was excited about the new year and ready to take things head on. New schedules were being made, new students were being assessed, and plans were coming together. It is such an exciting time of year! I am lucky this year to be able to work with teachers across my school district on instructional strategies for students with special needs. I anticipate not only sharing what I know, but learning so much from the wonderful special educators in our district. I cannot wait to share all of the great things happening!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I wanted to share some great quotes that I have found with all of you about the start of a new school year!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I challenge each of you reading this to find an area that you need to grow, change, or improve upon. The beginning of the school is a great time to develop new habits and to grow as a professional. Just think...at the end of the school year you are going to be so amazing a one thing (or maybe lots of things) because you started today!!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I hope you each have a blessed new school year!</div>

<br />
Cue the questions, crying, and worrying...and not from the kids! I'm talking about the parents. I can say this as a teacher of 5th graders and as a parent to a middle schooler; transitions are hard. Many of my 5th graders I get to have for 3 years, so I really get to know them and their parents by the time they are ready to head to the middle school. It makes it tough on all of us to let them go. Take heed, mamas, they will be ready. Middle school is like the great unknown, plus there are multiple classes and LOCKERS!! How in the world will they make it over there!? <br />
<br />
Here are a few tips that can help you (as a teacher) make it easier for the parents and students that are moving on to middle school:<br />
<br />
1. Set up transition meetings<br />
In my school district, I like that we are required to hold transition meetings on all special education students that are headed to our sister middle school. Several people are involved in this meeting, including, regular and special education teachers from the elementary school, related service providers, a special education teacher from the middle school, the parents and a chairperson. At this meeting we are able to talk to the parents about their concerns about middle school, speak about how the special education department works at the middle school, and update the IEP as necessary. <br />
<br />
2. Transition Letter & Survey <br />
Prior to the meeting, send home I send home a transition survey for the parents to complete along with the notice of conference. This survey allows parents to get their questions and concerns to me prior to the meeting just in case there is something I need to find out an answer to before the meeting takes place. (I have included a link to my letter and survey at the bottom of this post)<br />
<br />
3. Transition At-A-Glance<br />
Our middle school special education team meets with 3 different elementary schools in our district. Before we have the meeting I complete a Transition-At-A-Glance form on each of my students to give to the middle school special ed. team. After meeting on so many different students from different schools, I'm sure that it becomes a little overwhelming to keep everyone straight. Our middle school sister school is great about keeping notes on our students and keeping the students best interests in mind, but I feel better sending off my kiddos when I know I have supplied the new teachers with something they can look back on. (I've also included this at the end of the post)<br />
<br />
4. Breathe<br />
It's hard on all of us to take a next step, to go somewhere new, to close a chapter and start a new one. I read something recently that says (and I'm paraphrasing) that a new beginning cannot come without an ending. Middle school is a time full of new beginnings and elementary school does have to come to an end to make this transition happen. My best advice is to just breathe. Be present in the change and look for the good in what is to come.<br />
<br />
If you are one of my 5th graders parents and you are reading this, then this next part is for you:<br />
<br />
LME parents,<br />
I love your kids. I have watched many of them grow for three years now. I have had them since our school opened and they were third graders. They have come such a long way and have made tremendous growth. I cannot wait to sit with you on our transition meeting day and tell you how much your kid means to me and how much I am going to miss them. I'm fighting back tears as I type this, because I have so many memories of what your baby was like just 3 years ago or even what they were like at the beginning of this year. This group of 5th graders will forever have a special place in my heart. They were a new beginning for me, as I began teaching in a new school district and in a brand new school. As this chapter closes for them and for me, I want you to know just how big of an impact they have had on my life. I love your babies, your families, and I will miss them as they head on to bigger and better things. This group is going to do great things! I love them and miss them already.<br />
Sincerely,<br />
Mrs. Hinton<br />

<br />
I worked one day this week folks! One day! When it snows in Kentucky the whole state shuts down. :) Monday was MLK Jr. Day, Tuesday we went to school, Wednesday-snow day, Thursday-snow day, and Friday-snow day! I am not a huge fan of the cold or winter weather, but I love, love, love snow days! There is nothing like getting that "school is canceled" text message or seeing your school district name scroll across the bottom of the news! I know there are snow day haters and that's okay...haters gonna hate! Haha!! Just kidding, love you friends! I do want my summer break just as much as anyone else, but a day home out of the cold and under my blankets is just the way I like it!<br />
<br />
It's been quite sometime since I've done a Five for Friday and this one will have little to do with my school week (since I wasn't there much), but I still want to share with you my top 5 faves of this week!<br />

SnapType is an app developed for students that have a difficult time with handwriting and penmanship. Some students hate writing, because penmanship and the physical act of writing is just so overwhelming. This app allows you take a picture or import a worksheet and then type answers straight on the picture. Begin by taking a picture of the document or worksheet, tap to add text, then share as an image, PDF or SnapType document. The reviews and testimonials for this app speak for themselves! *The app is free, but I suggest going ahead and getting the paid version for $3.99. It allows you to save more documents. The free app allows 3 saved documents*<br />

Touch and Write is one of my all-time favorite apps. Students can learn how to write each letter of the alphabet right on the iPad. The best part about this is app is that you can choose to write in shaving cream, with pudding, or even using ketchup (all virtually, of course)! Sixteen different writing textures and 28 different writing papers gives students choice and provides an engaging medium to practice letter formation. Parents and teachers can use preprogrammed word lists to allow students to practice or sight words or you can customize your own word lists! This app is $2.99, but keep a close eye out, because I've seen it free before!<br />

If you love Touch and Write, then you will be head over heels for Touch and Write Phonics! Also coming in at the $2.99 price, Touch and Write Phonics provides fun practice for vowels, blends and diagraphs. Start by choosing the phonics component to work on and begin practicing color coded words that contain the phonics component you have chosen. Again, this app has 18 different writing textures (with sound effects)!! This is the most fun your student will have practicing phonics! An added bonus...this app tracks progress of phonics skills practiced!! The new series of posts will be My Week in Focus. Focus is my word for this 2016 and a way for me to stay focused in blogging is to commit to doing something weekly in relation to my blog. My Week in Focus will be a post about something in my classroom that I focused on doing or fixing for that week. So without further ado...<br />
<br />
<br />
In the past I have taught several resources classes during the day, but because of the needs of the students on my caseload, I am doing more coteaching and less resource and one of my special ed team colleagues is helping with a majority of my resource times, because there is just not enough time in the day to do everything alone. <br />
<br />
In one of my resource class times, I have 3 students reading with a strong focus on comprehension. I have tried several different resources with this group of students to help them learn and understand basic comprehension skills...some things have worked and other things have been a flop! As a group, the comprehension skills of these students (all fourth graders) are at least two years behind their peers, but their reading ability (how they decode words) is at or above grade level. This makes for quite the challenge, because I want them to read book that are appropriate reading ability, but not so far over their head in comprehension that they get no meaning from the story. <br />
<br />
I started out by doing a running record on each student and seeing what level they are on in reading and as I expected the reading ability was much higher than the comprehension skills. If you are a longtime reader of my blog, you know my love for Reading A-Z and Raz Kids, and you know my love for technology. After I determined guided reading level, I assigned each of these students to a Raz Kids account. Each student uses Raz Kids at least twice a week during their time in resource with me and will use it at extra times when I need to work one on one with one of my students from this group. I love the information I can get from progress reports online. I know the exact areas of comprehension my students are struggling with and I can tailor my lessons to address these areas. Below you can see one students comprehension skills report:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg12N60TgnoFCMEKImx5ji68mO8DXXRrHpCBxw4rIpJ8PPyUZyVeNpvmdzzEkNXJATZNO3PwrkEecJ99G-f9s8yqq2p-oYz6zke9lEf-ChcKJnTgcrVdNZYqkV9KS0vZXPKWV0Or9KAjrY/s1600/comp+skills.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="257" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg12N60TgnoFCMEKImx5ji68mO8DXXRrHpCBxw4rIpJ8PPyUZyVeNpvmdzzEkNXJATZNO3PwrkEecJ99G-f9s8yqq2p-oYz6zke9lEf-ChcKJnTgcrVdNZYqkV9KS0vZXPKWV0Or9KAjrY/s640/comp+skills.PNG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I can look at this report and know that I need to meet with this student to zone in on main idea and details!</td></tr>

<br />
<br />
Another resource that has become an invaluable tool in what I use during this resource group is the comprehension packs from <a href="http://www.teachingspecialthinkers.com/">Teaching Special Thinkers</a>. These are all picture books with accompanying visuals and comprehension questions. The books are engaging for this group of students and the visuals help aid in comprehension. As we preview the book, we discuss the title, characters and setting and while we read we add the visuals to the story map in the correct order. Each comprehension question has multiple choice answers in word and visual format. <br />

<br />
Finally, borrowing the idea from my friend at Teaching Special Thinkers, I use the story map to help aid in comprehension of grade level trade books. Right now, the 4th grade class is reading Tuck Everlasting. That book is pretty deep for any fourth grader, but especially for my students. Listening to a chapter read aloud is hard for my students to do and make meaning from. Most of the comprehension of this book comes from classroom discussion. This can be difficult for my students. I use adapted books and visuals for our story map to help them read and understand harder text and to be able to access same curriculum and texts as their peers. (On another post, I promise to share more about adapting grade level reading text!)<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Does this look like a list of your resolutions? There are some great ones on there for sure! A new year bring about a time of reflection and resolution and new year is no exception to that rule.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1bNr7pwY01vggB9AJZ9mDqjvezX_jqU-mqrue2jIcSld9uxtRA7bxh6AJIbnLRL3W_Kqb0DpkmvNsFOD982Md5kSg6w5ybSw0AKVX17i6ns6vvsTLO3SIXYTiBum5XGd-YqRoE2_BE68/s1600/new+year.jpg" /></div>
There are two times of the year that are my favorite, and both times are a time for reflection, resolutions, and new starts. The beginning of a new (calendar) year and a new school year allow me time to regroup and restart. <br />
Obviously, teachers love a new school year, because of a whole class of new students and a time to put all of that summer professional development to work, but the beginning of a new calendar year excites me even more. I find it refreshing to be able to reflect on my teaching practices of the first semester of school and think about what worked, what didn't, and what kinds of new strategies or programs I would like to begin. <br />
Maybe you have noticed (or maybe you have not), but blogging has taken a backseat since this school year began. Sometimes blogging can be difficult, because you get stuck in rut and I tend to think that I have nothing of interest to others to share. As I thought about the new year and looking at blogging again, I thought about why I began blogging in the first place. I began this blog for the simple fact that I wanted to share what it is like for a special education teacher that teaches in a resource classroom and is coteaching in regular education classrooms and in some ways I feel like I got away from that. My blog turned more from being a personal look inside my classroom and my style of teaching into a scheduled posts of top ten lists or article type writing of what I thought was popular or what people wanted to know about. Honestly, that is fine, but for me that made me not want to blog. Feelings of being not good enough to compete with other celebrity teacher/bloggers creeped into my mind and made blogging a job to me and not a fun hobby that I can use to share my passion for teaching.<br />
This year I have several resolutions and big changes are coming for me (more on those another time), but for now, my resolution to you my reader, is to get back to the basics and to show you what it is like to be a special educator and share an insiders look into my classroom. I will leave you with this...this year my word is focus. My focus, like many of yours gets pulled in so many directions, my family, friends, work, school kids, church, Facebook, blog, social media can all be important in some way, but when I spend too much time on any one thing, it pulls me away from someone or something else that could be a blessing in my life. I am putting my focus on things that are important to me and what I believe to be eternally significant, so there are somethings I have had to get rid of in my life and other things I have had to commit to doing better at. Blogging is one thing that I wanted to focus on, because it means a lot to me to help, inspire and encourage other special educators. This quote helps me to put things in perspective:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Right now, I am taking another shot! Friends and readers, I hope this time of year inspires you to take another shot, too!<br />

Special ed friends, it is so important to know your kids and to be prepared for a new year!<br />
<br />
Here are my top 10 tips for special education teachers:<br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">.</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">1. Read those IEPs and psychological reports</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">Do you want to know who you kids are? Read their reports and IEP! These two very important documents give you (almost) all of the information you will need about your students. I say 'almost' because you can get so much great information from the paperwork, but some of the best information you will get on the students will come from the student's previous teachers and their parents! (More on this in a minute) As far as getting all of the pertinent information you will need the child's due process folder is the place to go. Oh, and don't just read...take notes! That's what 'good readers' do, right?! :) I suggest writing down the student's category of disability, due dates, minutes and location of services, related services, goals, and any information that is of extra special importance (behavior, programming, special transportation, etc).</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">2. Meet the Parents</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">Take the time to send a note, postcard, make a phone call, use a carrier pigeon ;) Just make contact with the parents. I have to admit that I used to be kind of nervous about calling parents, until I became one. I know that I want to know my children's teachers, so I figure other parents must feel the same way. Your students are going to know their child's classroom teacher, but are they going to know you? Make sure they do. Introduce yourself! You are taking care of their precious child's most unique needs. They deserve to know that someone qualified is watching out for and creating materials that will make their child be successful.</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"> 3. Prepare Materials</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">After you have gathered information from paperwork and people, now is the time to prepare the materials you will need to make successful programming for your students. Some of your students may have sensory needs, need a visual schedule, or a behavior plan. Have something prepared for the first day, so the students know your expectations and are started off on the right foot. Remain flexible though, what you prepared may need some tweaking after you meet the child in person.</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"> This leads me to #4...</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"> 4. Be Flexible</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">This should probably be numero uno! Special education teachers should take a class in flexibilty. Schedules, students, due dates, are constantly changing. You have to hang in there and roll with the punches. Find a way to get organized so when the times get tough, you are able to bend with change! I can not tell you how many times I changed my schedule last year to accomodate different needs, gaining students, losing students, etc. I have learned the best laid plans can come to an end quickly when someone starts having a meltdown at 8am or forgets to take their medication and you find out about it at lunchtime! Just keep a level head and go with the flow!</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"> 5. Work WITH Your Co-Teachers </span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">One thing that is difficult for some teachers is to go into a classroom of another teacher. Some people welcome you with open arms and others feel like you are cramping their space. My advice is to feel the person out, find out their teaching strategy, study their classroom management and then figure out where your personality and strengths will fit in. I do not want to go in and take over another teacher's classroom, I want to feel like I belong there and feel wanted and needed. Saying that, you do have to be upfront with your co-teachers and ask what they are comfortable with. See if your coteacher wants you to have huge, medium, or small part in the classroom. Just remember to keep the kids in mind first of all.</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"> 6. It's All About the Kids</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">Seriously! It is! Don't get caught up in the 'adult' junk! If what you are doing is not for the kids then is it worth doing. Do everything with the students in mind, not yourself!</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"> 7. Is This Eternally Significant? </span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">Some "seasoned" teacher friends of mind always would say, "Is this (event, test, project) eternally signficant?" If it is isn't, then is in worth getting worked up over? Probably not. Keep things in perspective. Remember not to take things to personally, especially with "our" students. There will be days of meltdowns and tantrums, but so many times the meltdown isn't about you or even school at all. Keep a level head, take a deep breath, stay calm and deal with situation. This to shall pass.</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"> 8. Get Organized </span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">Purchase a big desk calendar, and at the beginning of the year, write down all of your annual review due dates, re-evaluation due dates, and any other important dates. Make sure you look at this calendar daily and know what is coming up. Don't get behind, because there is no catching up!</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"> 9. Get Organized #2</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">Find a monitoring system that works for you. Everyone is different and monitoring of IEP goals can be accomplished 5000 different ways. I like to use an excel document to plot my probe percentages that I gather from curriculum based measures, rubrics, and other assessments. Find your way! </span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">10. Document, document, document & Save </span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">In special ed, "they" say, "If it isn't written down, it didn't happen." Document everything! Parent phone calls, meeting notes, co-teacher conversations, work samples...everything! Save that documentation and also save work samples. You will need these at some point in your career. I like to keep my documentation in a binder that is tabbed for each student. I keep work samples in a file folder box with a lid. Each student has a labeled hanging file folder that stores weekly work samples for each IEP goal.</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"> *And a BONUS*</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">Become One with the Paperwork</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">Since I first mentioned becoming a special education teacher, people have groaned and told me that it is so much paperwork. They weren't kidding! There is a lot of paperwork. You have to find a way to stay on top of it (maybe that's why I have 2 tips for being organized)! I like to make one afternoon about logging in my monitoring probes and filing paperwork. If you don't do it, then you will be spending so much time at the end of the year filing and worrying. Don't do that to yourself. Get a system! :)</span><br />
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span>
<span style="line-height: normal;">I hope you have a wonderful new school year!</span><br />

Ahhhhh!! A new school year is a great time to reorganize and decide what has worked for you in the past and what no longer works. For years, I have a had a Special Education binder that included a copy of my students' IEPs, IEP at a glance, accommodation checklist, progress monitoring, and parent communication. It was helpful that all of the documents were in the same place, but it could be some cumbersome to carry home when I needed to work on a student's IEP for a meeting. This year I was inspired by my blogging friend <a href="http://www.youaut-aknow.com/">Erin at You Aut A Know</a> and how she organized some of her files. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQbTIB3b3Kk6RIbcVPek2Bq91-tE7hrCzFTujFl8PCh5YY6ByLA8AKyu95gaeHeod3MERZ_HkiDtqo32SB8TNjoE9YxS9lMC3IenH4u8IoKzTCQ30QzPUTzThi4nRNmsiVKw6tLMPAj8s/s1600/you+aut+a+know+pic.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQbTIB3b3Kk6RIbcVPek2Bq91-tE7hrCzFTujFl8PCh5YY6ByLA8AKyu95gaeHeod3MERZ_HkiDtqo32SB8TNjoE9YxS9lMC3IenH4u8IoKzTCQ30QzPUTzThi4nRNmsiVKw6tLMPAj8s/s320/you+aut+a+know+pic.png" width="180" /></a></div>

<br />
The first thing I thought of was how awesomely beautiful the color coding looked! After I got past the initial beauty and realized just how great this would work for me, I knew I had to get right on doing this for this school year.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This file is ready to hang</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Here's a little explanation of what you will find in each folder:<br />
Each of my students has one hanging file folder and inside that hanging file are three matching manilla folders. Folder number one is a copy of the current IEP, folder number two hold monitoring sheets (completed and blank ones and copies of progress data), and folder three is copy of parent notes and other communications. I like this organizational system so much better than my binder, because it allows me to grab just the one folder I need. I can take this one folder to a meeting or home to work on it without lugging around a whole binder. <br />
<br />
Of course, I couldn't totally do away with a binder, so I do still have one binder I use for progress monitoring. This binder is 1 1/2 inches and only contains data sheets for current data I am tracking. I also keep my accommodation checklist in this binder, a copy of my schedule and my para's schedule, and a copy of the <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Special-Education-IEP-AT-A-GLANCE-742211">IEP at a Glance</a>. I like to have this information on hand at a moment's notice to check if a certain student receives a certain accommodation (hello...it's the beginning of the year and I don't have this all memorized...YET!) This binder is much thinner and easy to carry with me from class to class while I am coteaching. <br />

<br />
This week's topic is The 1st Week of School!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyBO6sdeuliJTx_N8EOgTmW0OrIoX5bx_0EhLvwT6AJ6KK0PlcYmi8CU9QpInT_Ndxd6_LImgJpdwkgaRNsIVqBJnbwBF54nrGWDTy_dVMxYubL4ht9Xn-65QjRWdtCl7govHqQwitpEE/s1600/week+5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyBO6sdeuliJTx_N8EOgTmW0OrIoX5bx_0EhLvwT6AJ6KK0PlcYmi8CU9QpInT_Ndxd6_LImgJpdwkgaRNsIVqBJnbwBF54nrGWDTy_dVMxYubL4ht9Xn-65QjRWdtCl7govHqQwitpEE/s320/week+5.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The first week of school is always such a blur! It's a time to get to know your students, to make contact with your parents, and get your schedule figured out!<br />
<br />
I also like to bring my resource class kids to my room, so they can become familiar with it and so they know where to find me if they need me for something within the first few days of school. To help my students get used to my room, I created a Back to School Scavenger Hunt. The scavenger hunt has two parts. The first part is about hunting for items in the room. This allows they to explore the new space and find where all of the important stuff is located. The second part is a get to know you activity where the students have to find a friend that fits the characteristics listed in the box. You can download the scavenger hunt for FREE by clicking the picture below!<br />

This week, as you can see above is about working with paraprofessionals (classroom assistants, instructional assistants, etc). You know what they don't teach in college coursework? How to work with paraprofessionals! That's okay...now...I've had several years of experience working with paraprofessionals and I feel pretty good about it now. However, when I was straight out of college and many of the people I worked with were older than me and had been in special education longer than I had been, well, it was intimidating to say the least. I have some tips for all of you to make working with paraprofessionals a little more comfortable.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WyVaeotg4VI/VabwGOi45CI/AAAAAAAACis/gR0miECkBK0/s1600/para.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WyVaeotg4VI/VabwGOi45CI/AAAAAAAACis/gR0miECkBK0/s320/para.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
1. Respect! Respect their opinions, their ideas, their perspective. Some of my paras have been in special education or working with students for years and some have been brand new. Everyone brings something special to the table, everyone has their own life experiences and it is so important to get to know the people that will be working with you day in day out. Ask your paras what they expect, what they think the job they are doing is about, for suggestions, and listen to what they say. You never know when someone is going to know or say something that is going to be useful for your students.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Leave the adult "stuff" at home. As mentioned in number 1, everyone is bringing something different to the table. We all have our own "junk," but keep in mind that you and your paras are here for the kids, first and foremost. If there is something going on, be sympathetic, be a good listener, but be professional and keep the student first and deal with the other stuff at a different time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Communicate! If there are things going on at home or school, keep those lines of communication open. My para and I shared a room and were able to talk daily, but there have been schools I've been in that I don't see my paras all day, everyday and at the end of the day everyone is ready to go home. Schedule a time to meet with your staff. This allows you time to address needs and gives your staff time to express needs. This is something I would actually like to implement myself this year. Sometimes, I have great intentions, but really need to be more intentional...this is my year for that! :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Training. As a special educator, you have the experience and the schooling that qualifies you to teach students with special needs, but your para probably will have little to no training. It is important to train your para about various types of disabilities (depending on your student needs), how to handle specific situations, and set clear expectations about what he/she should be doing with the students or in the classroom.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. Teach expectations! We teach expectations to our students, but sometimes we leave this important piece out when training an adult. Sometimes we assume that because the para is an adult working with children with special needs, that they should know or already have the same expectations as you. That is not always the case. I have and have had WONDERFUL paraprofessionals, but it can be confusing for that person if I have not told them what I expect of them. At the beginning of the year it would be a good idea to have a meeting or conversation with your paras to outline your expectations. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
{You can find my paraprofessional handbook that lays out all of the expectations at my TPT store: <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Special-EducationThe-ABC-Guide-to-Paraprofessionals-Roles-and-Responsibilities-908467">The ABC Guide to Paraprofessionals' Roles and Responsibilities</a>. This is one of my best sellers and has great reviews!}</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Special-EducationThe-ABC-Guide-to-Paraprofessionals-Roles-and-Responsibilities-908467"><img alt="Special Education:The ABC Guide to Paraprofessionals' Role" height="400" src="https://mcdn.teacherspayteachers.com/thumbitem/Special-EducationThe-ABC-Guide-to-Paraprofessionals-Roles-and-Responsibilities-1436834549/original-908467-1.jpg" width="308" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WpCt8lFlLuI/VabmonLtSZI/AAAAAAAACic/dbfcwS_8ldE/s1600/abc%2Bguide.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="272" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WpCt8lFlLuI/VabmonLtSZI/AAAAAAAACic/dbfcwS_8ldE/s400/abc%2Bguide.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another great way to communicate your expectations is with your schedule. I shared in Week 1 of this blog hop my para schedules. Decide who/what/where you want your para to be with based on IEP needs and then schedule that para accordingly. I like to include 4 columns on the paraprofessional's schedule:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Time</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Location (classroom, resource room, lunch room, playground...)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Students needing assistance</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Task to complete</div>
<br />
I have found this to be extremely helpful and important!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMG7mKeTMFanIcacmo222DfHunjXPmI4lsHdiL2F46nzEfFTLCUOkkH9fnheLKTgv01Sapi_96jL8RNPYwD4AkxzHm9jn2Qo_bslRVVR2AZthzQGLSM2ThjydiDeHjcgwykkw32pEzZx4/s1600/para+schedule.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMG7mKeTMFanIcacmo222DfHunjXPmI4lsHdiL2F46nzEfFTLCUOkkH9fnheLKTgv01Sapi_96jL8RNPYwD4AkxzHm9jn2Qo_bslRVVR2AZthzQGLSM2ThjydiDeHjcgwykkw32pEzZx4/s400/para+schedule.png" width="308" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Example of Paraprofessional Schedule</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Paras sometimes get the dirty job...seriously! From changing diapers to cleaning vomit...the life of a para can be less than glamorous. Show your appreciation to your paraprofessional. Switch places with them sometimes. Don't ask your para to do anything you wouldn't do yourself and give them a break sometime and actually do those less desirable jobs yourself!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Paraprofessionals are so important in the special education classroom! I am so happy for the amazing paras (that are in da buildin'-----Amy---that one's for you!) and I couldn't do my job without them!!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love the beginning of a new school year! It brings me so much excitement! I love meeting my new students and parents or getting back in contact with my kids from the previous year. I consider myself lucky to be able to have the same kids for 3 years in a row, since I work with grades 3-5. I get to see so much progress across those three years and build some amazing relationships! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To get ready for the beginning of a new school year, there are several forms I like to send home and prepare for myself so I can become familiar with my students from Day 1. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. A letter home to parents to introduce myself </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. A parent survey to allow parents to tell me about their child (including strengths/needs and goals)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div>
I hope you enjoyed Week 1 and you were able to learn something that you could take back to your classroom this upcoming school year. This week's topic is...</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKtYV1RZrGrWmAsrgExwfQInzcPB50u0yqrTOqKgGZnJ2XE_1_0Bm7wuxJ9FWQqEGOk-d4XWsv0UwITFxT27GsfjajiMJ20eRyO7kkehgOo_sIHC4X7TCirLWU4awzP8po2JCK8R3HBoo/s1600/week+2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKtYV1RZrGrWmAsrgExwfQInzcPB50u0yqrTOqKgGZnJ2XE_1_0Bm7wuxJ9FWQqEGOk-d4XWsv0UwITFxT27GsfjajiMJ20eRyO7kkehgOo_sIHC4X7TCirLWU4awzP8po2JCK8R3HBoo/s320/week+2.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As a special education teacher, there are some years that I spend more time in the resource room and other years I spend most of my day out in the general education classrooms doing coteaching with my partner teachers. This year, much like last year, will be a healthy dose of both settings. The setup of my resource classroom is based on student needs from year to year. There are some years when I only really need a table to do small group intervention and then there are years (like last year) that I had several grade and ability levels of students all in the resource room at one time and I had to design and then redesign my room to help manage my classroom effectively. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrnHccIG7drBrqu-kyMn9fCdtBtuujRa99naCykMOoQh8_JWHCNReEKta2GYOr85KjLFcMKBk2FJH_MrIs_3DA3YxIHDw9uY7sqqDrYI1Nm8CN6cNzGh0S5Nbdq4Td7XtKi3LQOWFm5yw/s1600/resource+setup+important+points.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="312" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrnHccIG7drBrqu-kyMn9fCdtBtuujRa99naCykMOoQh8_JWHCNReEKta2GYOr85KjLFcMKBk2FJH_MrIs_3DA3YxIHDw9uY7sqqDrYI1Nm8CN6cNzGh0S5Nbdq4Td7XtKi3LQOWFm5yw/s640/resource+setup+important+points.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Any way the needs of my students go, I feel like there are areas of my room that are important to incorporate. The graphic above gives an outline to this post and what I consider when setting up my classroom from year to year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think that my room needs to echo the design of a "regular" classroom as much as possible. I believe that helps my students feel more comfortable and makes my room feel like all of the other classrooms in the building.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a list of the areas that I like to incorporate into my classroom setup:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. Small Group Intervention </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Individual Work Station (or 1:1 Teaching Area)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Computer/Technology</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. Library</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Cool Down Space</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6. Teacher Area</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
7. Materials/Classroom Supplies</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My classroom is currently in a state of disarray for summer cleaning, so I will post updated pictures of my room closer to the beginning of the school year. Until then, I'll share with you an easy way I have found to "work" on my classroom without actually being there or moving the first piece of furniture. By using PowerPoint, I can design my classroom at home :) The gray pieces are furniture that can be moved around and the blue pieces are fixtures in my classroom that must stay where they are.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZY2WSP1uIhqvfWj3yChU6zyLmThrJPk0RigAcnK6Kn6FZbRRqQRtp-9XWizpXBis_GWLxzqbYwJhaSlFGZVIWzBNhhl9CsugfcXdkFnXoWlbude4ZCIjkcH8588BBYx5zt44oZuVGA6M/s320/class+setup.png" width="320" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I do not overdecorate in my classroom for a couple of reasons. First of all, I personally do not like a lot of "stuff" around. If I do not really work on keeping my space organized then I can quickly let it get out of control. So, if I start with only what is actually need then I am less likely to create a mess of all of the cutesy, teacher things laying around. Second of all, the students that I work with typically have diagnoses of ADHD or ADD, anxiety, autism, learning disorders, etc. and limiting the visual clutter in my classroom helps them become less distracted. I have been in rooms that even I can't concentrate in because of all of the posters on the wall or bright colors. Now, I'm not hating if you are that type of teacher, it just doesn't work for me and typically doesn't work for my students. Neat, labeled and organized helps my students and help teaches them to be that way by example. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
Lastly, classroom management is extremely important in the resource room. Beyond setting up high expectations, clearly outlined rules, and a structured environment, a good behavior management and incentive program has always been helpful in my classroom. I have students for a very short period of time during the day, but we have a LOT to get done in that amount of time. It is important that each and every minute is used efficiently and effectively. A visual behavior system has been useful to implement in my resource room over the years. </div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
In the past I have used a clip chart system with students earning a point if they stay on green for the class. </div>
<div>
I have also used a class store. This worked well for me last year, because my reading program incorporated points and I used the reading points and behavior points as currency to shop from the store. </div>
<div>
This year, I have a few different ideas that I promise to share with you as the new school year gets closer! <br />

Listening: My kids discovered the movie "The Emperor's New Groove" this morning. They missed this movie the first time around and can't get enough of it this morning. I think they have the right idea on this dreary, rainy day! It's a great day for snuggles, blankets, snacks and movie watching!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Loving: For the past 3 weeks I have been teaching at Camp TLC. This is a 3 hour camp that goes on 3 days a week during the summer. The camp is for students in my school district that have autism. This is my first year to work the camp and I have to say that I have had a really great time. We have time for morning work, social skills lessons, sensory, art/crafts, gross motor play, snack (that the kids help make), and a weekly field trip. If you follow me on Instagram you can see some of the fun we have been having at camp! And if you don't follow...well what are you waiting for? Week 3: Happy 4th of July Week</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This week is all about being Star-Spangled!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thinking: I can't quit thinking about school. I think working camp has kept me in the school mode this summer. I have some really great ideas swirling around in my brain and have already created a few things for some of my students for next year that I can't wait to share with them and their parents. I also am excited about some new additions to our staff! We will have an even more amazing special ed staff next year!!! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Wanting: Although, this rainy day is enjoyable, I'm ready for an all day hot, sunshin-y day!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Needing: I need to clean the kitchen. Meh!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All Star: I am an all star collaborator! :) One of the best parts of my job is to be able to collaborate with others. Parents, teachers, administration, and my blogging friends are all people that I get to collaborate with. These people keep ideas flowing through my mind constantly! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, for now...I hope you are having a wonderful summer break! Remember to come right back here every Sunday for the Special Ed Summer Blog Hop!!</div>

<br />
<br />
This week's post is all about SCHEDULING!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi88n_Hvy4p6wNfvSF1dLxe3hz70yknMbk8KSbr4OQTC6hUVH5eQldBquRPG8snrivv-Utwh3U_15GnH5gS_LyFCbWZZjMoq_KEbMeGG1sxooXHKX08mXVavhD6cTe6GV__cY3Al1KojOw/s1600/week+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi88n_Hvy4p6wNfvSF1dLxe3hz70yknMbk8KSbr4OQTC6hUVH5eQldBquRPG8snrivv-Utwh3U_15GnH5gS_LyFCbWZZjMoq_KEbMeGG1sxooXHKX08mXVavhD6cTe6GV__cY3Al1KojOw/s320/week+1.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Ok...I've got to come out right here and tell you that scheduling is my nemesis...and it becomes even more difficult when you are a Type B kind of person! I am Kim Hinton and I do not love making schedules! Whew! Now with that off my chest, I can get on with it! :) <br />
<br />
No matter how hard it is for me to make a schedule, it must get accomplished. So, to begin making my schedule and my paraprofessional's schedule, I gather together the essentials:<br />
1. School Master Schedule (You gotta know when specials, lunch, recess, and all of the academics are taught)<br />
2. Grade Level Schedules<br />
3. Student IEPs to ensure all minutes are met<br />
<br />
First, I begin making my schedule by checking the IEP minutes for all of my students. I write down the student's name, resource minutes and subject for resource, coteaching minutes and subject for coteaching. <br />
<br />
Next, I ensure that I am able to get in the regular ed classroom for coteaching during (at least part of) reading and math. *Note: I teach special education for 3 grade levels. Thankfully, my colleagues have been good about staggering start times of math and reading so that I can get to each grade level. Be a team player, people, it will make your life easier!!* In my school district, it is considered best practice that if a student has resource (reading, for example) that they also receive coteaching minutes in the regular classroom. Makes sense, right? How can we expect a student that needs additional support (resource support) in an academic area to be able to "survive" in the classroom without supports? Also, in my district, the students must have access to the general curriculum. The students must attend general ed. reading/math/writing and resource has to be at a different time and "extra" instruction on top of the general instruction.<br />
<br />
Then, I begin fitting my schedule around the master schedule and teacher's daily schedules. This is the hardest part! It's like a 1000 piece puzzle and at times I am trying to "bang" one piece of the puzzle into the next, but at the end it all just fits so perfectly. (Well, until someone moves in and I have to redo the whole darn thing!)<br />
<br />
Here is what my schedule looks like (with student names removed of course):<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQLa6zgONqpDCpmQsR8D0Z38EUj-axwjvenOTPYnkCSn1FkRyvpArwqL6aDSu3G-Xax4rmaXDzFwZs5jUkMGIpMPkjzzUYO4eQ7_YkY207rhpfTOGHGRT8b9_tdy5TvWgGVIblZ9V2NKo/s1600/schedule.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQLa6zgONqpDCpmQsR8D0Z38EUj-axwjvenOTPYnkCSn1FkRyvpArwqL6aDSu3G-Xax4rmaXDzFwZs5jUkMGIpMPkjzzUYO4eQ7_YkY207rhpfTOGHGRT8b9_tdy5TvWgGVIblZ9V2NKo/s640/schedule.png" width="492" /></a></div>
<br />
I like to have the time, place/teacher, and student's needs listed on my schedule. On my paraprofessional's schedule I like to include the same 3 columns in addition to a final column outlining the task I expect the to be completed during this time. I keep this very general so that the schedule can be used throughout the year and not changed every week.<br />
<br />
This is an example of my paraprofessional's schedule from last year:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibExsiz0l3ceiGNgsaQqmFRquCiWvW_maJt3D6Joq_6c3i1twt2enV2K-FuMm4HyIwe3TYd9DE7Kga29w9Ynw32mNF32AAuyUljcFPqGiLZ4g8Kuv9TC-hkOC51n8j-4ffXY4yjlRZrBk/s1600/para+schedule.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibExsiz0l3ceiGNgsaQqmFRquCiWvW_maJt3D6Joq_6c3i1twt2enV2K-FuMm4HyIwe3TYd9DE7Kga29w9Ynw32mNF32AAuyUljcFPqGiLZ4g8Kuv9TC-hkOC51n8j-4ffXY4yjlRZrBk/s640/para+schedule.png" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, everyone's schedules are complete and ready to put into use. Flexibility is the key word, however, because there is always going to be something that needs to be tweaked a little or changed.<br />
<br />
Next week, I will be back with this Summer Sped Blog Hop with all you need to know about Classroom Setup!<br />
<br />
<div>
Hop on over to Ms. P's Specialties for some more advice about scheduling!<br />

Although I am not one of the big time sellers on TPT I have seen my profit grow over the last year and that definitely excites me. I have also connected with a great group of special education bloggers/sellers and they inspire me to be better and in turn create better products to share with all of you. When I was thinking of my dream and how they are related to TPT, I can say that TPT (and blogging) have helped my dreams come true! Here are some of the dreams that I am still making happen (or would like to see happen):<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio8flgzq-StbbbBgomhSlq6_4ICE9U1ii8fI4x-3QsIYU9HaqnaqK2BFCFCwMpZyIUOGEmBxC69o1O7GHqodTy9Qt60fWkcRW0usx2BLeUrqPaoJB1vMAMZkbhn0WwAJUPRYt-T5tV1x8/s1600/Dare+to+Dream.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="387" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio8flgzq-StbbbBgomhSlq6_4ICE9U1ii8fI4x-3QsIYU9HaqnaqK2BFCFCwMpZyIUOGEmBxC69o1O7GHqodTy9Qt60fWkcRW0usx2BLeUrqPaoJB1vMAMZkbhn0WwAJUPRYt-T5tV1x8/s400/Dare+to+Dream.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. Vacation: The profit from TPT has allowed me to pay for some great vacations including a fun Bahama cruise with some of my girlfriends! I am thankful for that and for the little bit extra money it gives me to take my family on vacations. I would love to treat my family to a vacation, completely paid for by TPT! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. Pay Off Debt: My husband and I are proud graduates of Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace, but we still have some debt that we would like to get rid of, including a car and my hub's student loans. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3. Inspire Others: One of my favorite parts of blogging and selling is the reach that I have to other teachers, especially special ed teachers. It truly makes me feel so special that a teacher all of the way across the country wants my advice on reading or math or behavior. The emails I receive from others confirms to me that blogging and selling on TPT is the right thing to do. I know I have blogged before about the opportunities blogging has awarded me. As long as I can continue to inspire others, I will continue creating and dreaming big. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
4. Consult: One of my biggest dreams, professionally, is to become a special education consult. I have been lucky enough to do this on a small scale within my school district by presenting PD, being on our autism cadre, and assisting others with evaluations. I am thankful that my products are able to give other special education teachers out there a way to reach their students or organize their special ed forms. Maybe one day, when TPT can truly supplement my salary, I can become a full time consultant. That is my BIG dream!!! :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now it's your turn! What are your dreams? What do you want to make happen through TPT? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
#dreambig </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

I am excited to be a part of the TPT Seller Challenge this summer. I chose to revamp my Role Play Scripts and they got a makeover from top to bottom! The scripts were one of the very first items I posted on TPT and it is also one of the most downloaded items. The comments for the product are always positive and about needing and looking for scripts for social skill groups. I love the makeover for this product and I already have scripts for other social skills in the works! </div>

Summer 2015 is here!! The end of the school year is always a bit emotional for me and this year is no different. I miss my school kids, my friends, and having a schedule. I had big blogging plans this school year, but my real job took precedent and blogging often got put on the back burner! Good news though...I "plan" to share some of the fun I had this school year with you this summer. <br />
<br />
This summer I'll be reflecting on some great strategies and teaching practices I've used. I'll also get rejuvenated with my loose summer schedule and get prepared for next school year! <br />
<br />
I can't wait to share with you all what this summer holds!!!Kim @ Mrs. Hs Resource Roomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04328211791741452340noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6753139138995738154.post-75996833414093173842015-05-25T09:06:00.002-04:002015-05-25T09:06:09.769-04:00Happy Memorial Day!Happy Memorial Day! <br />

<i>I would like to welcome Caitlin from Learning Ahoy! as my Special Education Featured Teacher for the month of April! I know you are going to love her post about adapted books and how you can make your own. She also is sharing something special with us all! Thanks, Caitlin!!</i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
Hello everyone! My
name is Caitlin and I am the author of the blog<a href="http://www.learningahoy.com/" target="_blank"> Learning Ahoy!!</a> I have been teaching special education for 10
years and have taught kiddos ages 2 – 12.
I have been married to my husband for almost 8 years and I am mom to 3
little boys (although they are going really fast). My passion is the students who need the most
help. The ones who do not have a
traditional communication system, who have medical needs, who may need help
learning to navigate in their wheel chair and everything else that comes
naturally to so many. <o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3KHeIUk1m07lD3G8L18D5Ri_OjMZxP_Lz-HqI3NhfkNRhId6hsqj7wdhlgc04hYRiSWry5v6GrBU7pmdcy95b3tiDpZZsvmnxLBrG57z2ZjvnGl7Vo3aLeYj4GhQMkW3r5I0ZHQ1sEzQ/s1600/interactive+boardbooks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3KHeIUk1m07lD3G8L18D5Ri_OjMZxP_Lz-HqI3NhfkNRhId6hsqj7wdhlgc04hYRiSWry5v6GrBU7pmdcy95b3tiDpZZsvmnxLBrG57z2ZjvnGl7Vo3aLeYj4GhQMkW3r5I0ZHQ1sEzQ/s1600/interactive+boardbooks.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
In trying to help my students learn (and be engaged in what they are learning) I have found that the more hands on I make something, the better they grasp it. For this reason, I try to make books as interactive as possible. I do this in a number of ways. One way is, I adapt book is by using board books (more durable) and making pictures (I usually use boardmaker) to go along with them. I look for board books when I am at garage sales and thrift stores that was I can get them for 25¢ each (sometimes even free when I mention what I am using them for). Once I have a stack of a few books, I sit down and make all of the pictures at once. I go through the book and find words or pictures that I can use to help build vocabulary and keep my students engaged. I print the pictures out and laminate using 5mil film (again, durability). I then cut them out and use Velcro to attach them to each page. When we read the book, I like to start by putting all of the picture on a vellum board I made and talking about what each picture is. We then read the book and add the pictures when needed. The Velcro on the pages are my cues that we need to add something. This has worked great with my students this year! They have more involved when we do read alouds and are demonstrating higher rates of comprehension.</div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMiG1YwsDf7nXLXgpgklFHbFkEybdVJf8bggL5Sz7ns5ys98GGYmymeGbklxO31VPkx2TdvW1h-X9zDfMQuXm811LIyX9EDyLR2vkHJrbexR_r6eDzr0t2LS6sozHxUkBtoDS3EXEM3Io/s1600/shamrock+shamrock.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMiG1YwsDf7nXLXgpgklFHbFkEybdVJf8bggL5Sz7ns5ys98GGYmymeGbklxO31VPkx2TdvW1h-X9zDfMQuXm811LIyX9EDyLR2vkHJrbexR_r6eDzr0t2LS6sozHxUkBtoDS3EXEM3Io/s1600/shamrock+shamrock.png" height="320" width="320" /></a> Another way is that I
often write my own interactive books or use ones that have been written by
other special education teachers. Some
examples of these are <a href="http://www.learningahoy.com/2015/02/valentine-blog-hop-my-turn.html">Shamrock,
Shamrock, What are you hiding</a>? (A freebie in my TpT store!) and <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Where-is-the-Turkey-Interactive-Positional-word-book-BUNDLE-945544">Where
is the Turkey?</a> . Just last weekend I
wrote a book called <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/A-Plant-Needs-An-interactive-book-student-book-1775424">Plants
Need</a> because I could not find anything simple enough (and still age
appropriate) for my students . I used it
this week with my class and it was a hit.
My students blew me away with how they retained the information
throughout the week. <o:p></o:p></div>

Well, if you made it this far, I have a <b>surprise</b> for
you! I have a new interactive book that
I am posting just for this guest post. And guess what?!? It is free until

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
Hi everyone! Gabrielle here from <a href="http://www.teachingspecialthinkers.com/">Teaching Special Thinkers</a>! Today I want to share with you about my “color-coding”
classroom organizational system. Although it sounds silly, assigning my
students a color at the beginning of the school year is my go-to for
organization. It has saved my sanity. With 3 instructional assistants, a lead
teacher, and a student teacher, keeping data and student materials organized
and easy to access can be quite a challenge in a busy classroom! </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
With 8 students, I basically use the colors of the rainbow:
red, pink, orange, yellow, light blue, dark blue, and green. I bought packs of
colored paper at Office Max 2 years ago and I am STILL using the same packs –
quite the bargain! Since I do not put the students' names on anything and just use their colors, I can re-use EVERYTHING each year. Oh yea, and if I have a student move and get a new student, no need to fret, they just move right in the "vacant" color. It's like magic to a busy teacher!!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
Here are a few different ways I use the color-coded system
in my classroom:<o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><u><b>Adult Schedules</b></u></span><br />
<br />
When I created our master zone schedule,
the student colors come in handy. In our “adult” schedule, I use time intervals and student colors to
show adults where they need to be throughout the day and WHO they are working
with.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><u><b>Student Schedules</b></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<br />
In our classroom, each student has a
schedule for the day. At the beginning of the year, all of my students usually
start on a picture schedule or words with pictures that are Velcroed onto a
large strip in their cubbies. Their cubby, and schedule cards are both in their
“color” so that it’s super easy for them to locate their schedule at the
beginning of the year, AND it’s a piece of cake for the adults to reorganize
all the schedule cards at the end of the day when we are redoing schedules for
the next day.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
As a special educator, DATA has become my middle name.
In order to keep up with all the data collected in our classroom, I created
data binders and data clipboards for each student in our classroom. The
clipboards are hung in a central location in our classroom so when an adult
knows they are working with a certain student, they can quickly grab their clipboard
to take data. I keep all the data we collect throughout the year in the data
binders, which are kept on the top of the student’s cubbies. <o:p></o:p></div>

color-coding system as well. In the picture before, the boxes are coded with
the student’s colors, along with the binders that we use to collect data on
discrete trial training and fluency of mastered skills. <o:p></o:p></div>

I prepare student reading and math binders
at the beginning of the year with all the “copied” workbook materials we use.
For example, in a student’s reading binder, I have tabs for writing, Word’s
Their Way, phonics, handwriting, etc. Of course, the student’s binders are
covered with their color paper and either “reading” or “math” for easy access
for the adults and the students. <o:p></o:p></div>

I am currently an autism classroom teacher of students in grades kindergarten through 2nd grade. My passion for providing children with Autism high quality instruction as well as a safe and nurturing learning environment that fosters independence and growth has granted me the opportunity to develop my blog where I strive to empower others who support individuals with Autism and developmental disabilities. Through a desire to engage each and every learner in my own classroom, my passion for creating interactive and appropriately leveled resources has grown and developed over the past three years. My goal, through my profession as a teacher and as a member of the online teacher blogger community, is to advocate awareness and acceptance of individuals with Autism, as well as help others who work with these individuals meet their maximum potential in and out of the classroom. </div>
