Workshop Wednesday-Word Work

I'm joining up with Ideas by Jivey this week for Workshop Wednesday!  This week the topic is Word Work and how you use it in reader's workshop.

This is my word work area.  The small whiteboard hold the directions for the word work and is also needed sometimes to complete word work.  The two ottomans hold all of the materials needed for word work.  (I scored these ottomans with lift off lids at Target on CLEARANCE!)
My word work works like this:
Each student is tested on fluency each Monday.  The words that the student misses, becomes a word the student needs to know.  These words are placed on notecards and stored in plastic notecard boxes.  The students also have words from their sight word list.  I use FRY words for sight word practice.  The students have between 10-15 words in their word box.  The students have time in their schedule to work on their individual words.  They are assessed on the words on Fridays.

See what's inside the ottomans and what activities my kids love to use:

I found these red, zipper bags at the Dollar Tree.  They are perfect for holding word work materials and also fit neatly into the ottomans.  Here you see my Nuts and Bolts activity.  The twist the nuts on the bolts to spell their words.

Stickers and Stamps!

Black paper and Chalk
Foam letters

All activities neatly tucked away.

Also, if you've been reading my blog lately, you know that I discussed my procedures for  teaching resource reading/guided reading.  Each guided reading lesson has a word work component.  Some weeks it may be spelling patterns and other weeks it may be synonyms, antonyms, etc.  I keep any activity sheets and instructions for specific activities in the word work area.  The students are required to complete the weekly guided reading lesson specific activity before they can do a choice word work activity.

Word Work Wednesday

Welcome back to Word Work Wednesday!  I had a couple of link ups last week and I was so excited.  I have tried some link ups in the past, but this was the first one that I had some participation in! Yippee!  Here is this week's word work:

NUTS & BOLTS

Isn't it amazing that teachers can walk into just about any store and find something to create a lesson or activity?  So, can you guess where I went with my husband last weekend?  If you guessed Lowes, you got it!  This one is so simple and has does double duty!  This one is great for word work (of course), fine motor skills, and a good fidget for those that can't keep still!

Here's what I did:
1.  Go to <insert fave hardware store>
2.  Purchase a few bolts and a box of nuts (these are 3/4")
3.  Write the alphabet on the nuts.  I wrote the alphabet 3 times and the letter R, S, T, L, N, and all of the vowels a few extra times.  I wrote the letters on each side of nut so when you twist the nut on the bolt it doesn't matter what side it ends up on your letters will line up.
4.  Have the student grab their word list and get to work!
5.  This activity was kid-tested and teacher approved!   My daughter (fourth grade) and my son (Kindergarten) loved this activity!

B2S #4---and Word Work Wednesday

I am trying something new...Word Work Wednesdays.  Our school is new to the Daily 5/CAFE this year and I am in love with Working with Words Activities.  This is so perfect for my special education students.  They need so much extra practice with their sight words and this gives them ample opportunity during the day to work on the words that they need the most help with.  I am creating so many Word Work boxes right now...I just can't help myself.  I have scoured the internet (and Pinterest) and found so many wonderful ideas.  I want to use them all, but I won't, I know to only introduce a few at a time...but man, it's gonna be difficult!  It's just so dang fun!!!

So, here is my Work with Words activity for today...

MYSTERY WORDS

Materials:  index cards, glue, crayons, envelopes

How to:  Make cards with your desired words (use glue to write the words)
When glue dries, place cards inside envelopes and use a crayon to make a rubbing

And here is a button for you to grab and link up YOUR favorite Word Work activity below!!

So follow me...and link up!! What are you waiting for? :)
